Games Start Today

The various Major League-affiliated teams start playing each other today. The Yankees and the Bombers play Minnesota and Toronto, respectively. I think the Bomber-Toronto game is here, starting around 10:30 a.m. and finishing around 12:30 or 1. I’m learning more about the nature of the camp–at this time of year, after the Major and Minor Leagues have completed their seasons, a lot of the players are here for some additional “fine tuning” after having spent the summer at either Tampa Bay or Staten Island. Of the others that are here, some will move up to TB or SI next year and some will return, hoping to be promoted later in the season. Playing with Tampa Bay is on everyone’s wish list, but some will jump higher to AA (double A) Trenton or AAA Columbus and one or two, according to Abel, might have a shot at seeing some action with the Big Team near the end of next season. Such are the dreams of the young men here, contagious dreams that touch some older men, too.

I took another trip into Santo Domingo yesterday to buy some supplies and to do some more footwork on getting my work visa. I bought some textbooks that will, I hope, reduce my workload somewhat and help me to prepare more interesting lessons for the players. When I refer to my workload, I’m not talking about not having any free time at all. But, if I want to watch some of the games, I have to get up early in the morning or stay up late at night to prepare the lessons, and I definitely want to watch the games as much as possible.

Here’s one of the better shots I got during the intra-squad games. This young guy is Francisco Castillo, and he played with Staten Island last summer. More later.
